max scheler, in all his good intentions to make some sense of his Christian and Corinthian life, hypothesised that everything has a set of values imbedded within them. he coined this theory of his as ordo amoris. we see things or people, and their set of values are the ones which reach out to us, attracting us to them. he further postulates that we need to progress in this staircase of values, starting from the purely sensory (taste - delicious, sight -- beautiful, etc.) to that of which is holy (fulfills our souls, gives us salvation), and the only decisive way of doing so is through love. scheler defines love as "the movement from a lower value to a higher value". oh, and he said that this ordo amoris is bestowed unto us and everything around us by God, therefore, we are all destined to love.

years later, the Church excommunicated him for his hedonistic way of life i.e. he couldn't keep his dick inside his pants. scheler reformulated his theory, although he retained all the stuff about values and his ordo amoris but declared that the god which he referred to as all-loving and merciful, he replaced with an impotent god -- a god who created everything for his own, masturbatory desires.
